Unit Price Guide

How Is Unit Price Calculated?

Unit price is simply Price รท Quantity, giving you the cost per single unit (per ounce, per pound, per item, etc.). Comparing unit prices โ€” rather than total prices โ€” is the only fair way to tell which package size is actually the better deal, since bigger packages don't always cost less per unit.

Reading Unit Price Tags at the Store

Most US grocery stores print a unit price on the shelf tag, usually in small print below the item price (e.g. "$0.31/oz"). This calculator lets you double-check that math or compare products from different stores or brands where the units printed don't match.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the bigger package always cost less per unit?

Not always. "Bulk" or family-size packaging is often, but not guaranteed, to be cheaper per unit โ€” sales, private-label brands, and club-store pricing can flip that. Always check the actual unit price rather than assuming.

Can I compare products in different units, like oz vs. lb?

You need to convert them to the same unit first (16 oz = 1 lb) before comparing. This calculator handles that automatically as long as you select the correct unit for each product from the dropdown.

Why don't the unit price tags at two different stores match?

Stores sometimes use different base units (per ounce vs. per pound, or per 100g vs. per kg) on their shelf tags, which makes them hard to compare at a glance. Entering the numbers here normalizes both to the same unit.

Should I always buy the lower unit price option?

Unit price tells you the better value mathematically, but also consider whether you'll actually use the larger quantity before it expires or goes stale โ€” a "deal" isn't a deal if part of it goes to waste.
