Discount Calculator Guide
How Is a Discount Calculated?
The amount you save is calculated as: Savings = Original Price ร (Discount % รท 100). The sale price is the original price minus that savings amount. If sales tax applies, it's added to the sale price, not the original price, since most jurisdictions tax the amount actually paid.
Common Discount Amounts
| Discount | You Pay | On a $100 Item |
|---|---|---|
| 10% off | 90% of price | $90.00 |
| 20% off | 80% of price | $80.00 |
| 25% off | 75% of price | $75.00 |
| 30% off | 70% of price | $70.00 |
| 50% off | 50% of price | $50.00 |
| 70% off | 30% of price | $30.00 |
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a percentage discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage (as a decimal) to get the amount saved, then subtract that from the original price to get the sale price. For example, 20% off $50 = $50 ร 0.20 = $10 saved, so the sale price is $40.
Is tax calculated before or after the discount?
In almost all cases, sales tax is applied to the discounted (sale) price, not the original price โ you're taxed on what you actually pay. This calculator applies tax after the discount for that reason.
How do I stack multiple discounts?
Stacked discounts are applied sequentially, not added together. For example, 20% off followed by an extra 10% off is NOT 30% off โ it's 0.80 ร 0.90 = 0.72, or 28% off total. Run this calculator twice, using the first sale price as the second calculation's original price.
What does "up to 50% off" actually mean?
It means the maximum discount in the sale is 50%, but not every item is necessarily discounted that much โ some items may be 10% or 20% off while a few flagship items hit the full 50%.
